Many children may have difficulties related to tongue-ties and lip-ties, but unfortunately, it’s often not identified until later in life. It can cause various nursing challenges, failure to gain weight, speech difficulties, and cavities among other issues.
At Westerville Pediatric Dental, we examine the entire mouth, not just the teeth. We can easily repair them in the office with a dental laser with minimal to no bleeding and no stitches. The laser is a pen-like device that corrects the excess tissue very quickly.
Your baby may have a lip-tie and/or tongue-tie, or even a combination, if your infant is having nursing difficulties, challenges with taking a bottle, or failing to gain weight appropriately. These can be missed easily. We don’t want the time spent with your infant breastfeeding to be stressful. Breastfeeding does not have to be painful. Also, tongue-ties, or ankyloglossia, can contribute to speech challenges. We work with pediatricians, lactation consultants, orthodontists and speech pathologists to confirm correction is indicated.
