Dental Exams:

According to the Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, your child’s first dental examination is recommended at the time of the eruption of the first tooth and no later than 12 months of age. We follow the guidelines provided by The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and American Academy of Pediatrics. Westerville Pediatric Dental recommends regular dental exams.

Dr. Richards focuses on prevention dentistry, but often we feel that dental disease can be silent until it’s too late. We may recommend radiographs or x-rays of teeth if hidden dental problems are likely. X-rays help us appropriately manage our patients. Timely dental check-ups can prevent more extensive and expensive dental care. We firmly believe the early diagnosis of dental problems provides the opportunity for successful intervention. Dr. Richards will recommend a recall schedule that fits your child’s needs.

The mouth and teeth are intricately linked to the entire person. Healthy teeth contribute to overall health, well-being, nutrition, and even school performance. Studies show that children with dental pain are more likely to miss school and perform poorly in school activities. Dental disease can interfere with proper nutrition, talking, confidence, daily living and overall quality of life.

According to the Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, here is what is assessed in a dental exam:

  • General health/growth.
  • Tooth/dental pain.
  • Soft tissues of the face.
  • Joints that move the jaws and mouth.
  • Gums and soft tissues inside the mouth.
  • Oral hygiene and gum health.
  • Teeth and bone.
  • Biting characteristics and alignment of teeth.
  • The risk for cavities and gum disease.
  • Behavior and ability to tolerate dental treatment.
